ElectNext Helps Educate Voters on Issues

The ElectNext website wants to educate people on political issues and encourage people to vote. It also helps match people with candidates who have similar views. After a voter rates political statements, ElectNext calculates how close to or far away from a candidate?s positions that voter is.

ElectNext collects data on issues and is not trying to push a specific political agenda. It says it maintains information on 4,500 candidates and officials in office across the United States, taking data from public statements, interest group ratings and campaign finance data, according to its website.

Dave Zega, national director, told RESCUECOM, ?We are working to increase the level and extent to which people are informed, engaged and provided opportunities to participate in the political events and decisions that directly affect their lives, every day ? including voting. That?s why we are building the big political database on issues, politicians and political events like, but not limited to, elections, from the national to the neighborhood level.?

ElectNext calls itself a ?civic engagement startup.? The company licenses its data to interested parties, including broadcast media, search engines and educational non-profit organizations. ElectNext also encourages candidates and political experts to contact the company directly to present their opinions.

The website starts out with major issues to agree or disagree with, strongly or not, and indicate if that issue is important to you. For example, one statement is, ?Purchase and possession of firearms is a constitutional right protected in the Second Amendment and is not subject to restriction or regulation.?

There are also statements on the economy, taxes, foreign policy, national security, illegal immigrants, health care, education, the environment, abortion, gay rights and separation of church and state.

The ElectNext blog also discusses top issues for further insight into candidates? positions. Among ElectNext participants, the main issue is the economy.

?Our users are generally representative of the voting public with perspectives all along the political spectrum,? Zega noted. ?However, we?ve also found that many users are surprised by their results.?

?Voting decisions are frequently based on political ideology or party affiliation,? he continued. ?At ElectNext, our candidate-matching tool asks users to take stands on issues ? not party platforms or loaded questions ? concrete issues that are current, relevant and part of the public debate and agenda. It?s for this reason that users are sometimes surprised when, based on issue and position alignment, they are matched to a candidate whose party affiliation is different from their own.?

Of course, traffic to the website increases before an election. ?Since July, we have seen four straight months of 1,000 percent growth and more than 1 million unique users in the month of October alone,? Zega said.
