1.5 carat meal: Man swallows diamond in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) ? A man visiting a gem exhibition in Sri Lanka's capital swallowed a 1.5 carat diamond in front of the owner and was taken by police to a hospital, where an X-ray showed the $13,000 stone inside him.

Exhibitor Suresh Wijekoon said the man was behaving suspiciously at his stalls and when he reached closer to the suspect, the man suddenly swallowed the diamond at his hand before Suresh alerted police at the exhibition venue.

Chou Wan, a 32-year-old from China, is in custody pending further investigation, police spokesman Ajith Rohana said.

An X-ray proved the diamond was inside Chou's body, said hospital director Dr. Anil Jasinghe at Colombo National, where the suspect was taken for the test.

Suresh, owner of Belgrade International Pvt Ltd, said the diamond weighed about 1.5 carats. It was worth 1.8 million Sri Lankan rupees ($13,636), Rohana said.

Sri Lanka does not mine diamonds but is renowned for other highly treasured gems. Facets Sri Lanka 2012 is the island nation's annual largest gem and jewelry exhibition and it attracts a large number of local and foreign buyers.

Flixster relaunches as a tool for movie discovery

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Flixster relaunched its website on Tuesday, hoping to transform the service into the best tool for finding, watching and owning new movies.

In its old version, users could find films by searching for titles or crew; the new site - still in its beta version - offers all sorts of filters such as a film's rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the year it was released.

"The problem we are trying to solve is that with video-on-demand, you spend 15 minutes paging through possibilities - you can't find a good movie," Steve Polsky, preisdent and COO of Flixster, told TheWrap. "You have the same problem on iTunes, Amazon and Netflix."

"This is a consumer-centric, simple, intuitive way for you as a consumer to find the movies you want to see and manage the movies you own."

Polsky said the best comparison for the new Flixster is travel service Kayak, which lets users search for flights across multiple airlines and websites.

Whereas on Netflix you can only stream films or rent films and on Fanhattan you can only search, the new Flixster combines both services.

Once you select a movie you can either tag it for later viewing, or choose to rent, stream or buy it across services such as Netflix, Amazon and iTunes.

Warner Bros., which owns Flixster, is also hoping this relaunch provides a much-needed shot in the arm to UltraViolet, the industry-backed cloud movie service. Though streaming and renting are options through UltraVIolet, declining ownership is what worries movie executives.

"We are pushing forward UltraViolet," Polsky said. "The goal behind this relaunch is that when people create a locker, there's a mass of movies in their locker. We want them to think about it differently. Flixster becomes a place to collect and manage movies and we want to get as many consumers over the hurdle as we can."

How to Prepare Your Swimming Pool for Winter | Home ...

Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. For many homeowners, it also is one of the last times of the year that they will be using their swimming pools as cooler weather sets in and thoughts turn to school and fall activities. Of course, if you live in Hawaii or south Florida, you may use your pool year ?round. For everyone else, preparing a swimming pool for winter involves several important steps.

1. Treat your pool with chemicals. You won?t be draining your pool completely of water, but you will be lowering the water level. The first step to take is to clean your pool and ensure that it has the proper chemical balance for winter. That means a pH concentration of 7.2 to 7.6 with a total ppm of 80 to 125 for most pools. Calcium should measure 175 to 225 ppm, a chlorine stabilizer should be at least 30 ppm and free chlorine should come in at 1.0 to 4.0 ppm according to Lowes.

2. Remove and store equipment. Ladders, railings, toys, volleyball nets and all other recreational goodies need to be take out of your swimming pool. Once each has dried, put these items in storage.

3. Place winterizing chemicals in your pool. You will want the pool water to stay clean while it is covered up and out of use until the next swimming season. Add in a winterizing chemicalto keep your water clear. Follow the manufacturer?s instructions for a precise job.

4. Check filters and skimmers. Debris, dirt and other decontaminants can accumulate inside of your pool?s filters and skimmers. Remove debris and other obstructions.

5. Drain the pool to the proper level. You are now ready to remove some of the pool?s water. Depending on the type of swimming pool you have, that level will range from 1-inch to as much as two-feet below the skimmer opening. Follow your pool?s instruction?s guide as those levels vary depending on the type of pool and the cover used.

6. Remove and install. At this point in the swimming pool winterization process, you are ready to remove the directional fittings and install the freeze plugs. Store these fittings with your pool supplies.

7. Install your pool cover. Your final step is to install a pool cover. Here, you must follow the manufacturer?s instructions. In addition, you may need assistance to complete this task. Your work is done once the pool cover is securely in place.

If you live where extreme cold sets in during the winter, you may need to add in a non-toxic antifreeze. Different from automotive antifreeze, this chemical generally comes in 1-gallon container or may come concentrated in a 1-quart container. Look for protection to as low as minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit, wherever possible.

Obama tours storm-ravaged Louisiana parish

NEW ORLEANS - Taking a detour from his campaign battleground tour, President Obama today surveyed a Louisiana neighborhood hit hard by the floods of Hurricane Isaac, reassuring victims of federal recovery aid and hailing the first responders who ensured no lives were lost.

Obama got a first-hand look at the devastation in St. John the Baptist Parish, one of the hardest hit in the storm, situated roughly 30 miles west of downtown New Orleans.

His motorcade passed streets lined with mounds of debris, uprooted trees, ruined furniture and appliances piled in yards and along the curb. The air smelled of trash and sewage as it baked in the 100-degree heat. He later went house to house in the Ridgewood neighborhood of La Place, shaking hands with residents and hearing their stories.

"There is enormous faith here, enormous strength here," Obama said after his tour. "You can see it with these families - they were just devastated a few days ago and they are already smiling and laughing and feeling confident about the future and pulling together."

Disaster response coordinators who briefed Obama on the recovery effort said that facilitating the return of more than 3,900 evacuees to St. John's Parish and providing them with temporary housing and transportation remains the most urgent challenge. Officials said they were also scrambling to reopen public facilities, like schools and fire stations.

"Right now we're still in recovery mode. And that means that our biggest priority is helping to house people who have been displaced," Obama said.

"We're also going to make sure at the federal level that we are getting on the case very quickly on figuring out what exactly happened here and making sure it doesn't happen again," he added, referring to the failure of a local levee meant to protect the area.

Flooding caused by Isaac was unprecedented and unexpected for St. John's Parish, flowing in quickly from two directions at the height of the storm and cutting off access on Interstate 10.

"Some of the folks we just walked by literally had to be saved by boat. They were in their homes trapped, the waters came in so quickly. And this is an area that hadn't been flooded in 17 years, so as a consequence folks just weren't anticipating and accustomed to the scale and scope of the destruction," Obama said. "But because of the great work of law enforcement, National Guard, Coast Guard, making sure that folks were out in rescue mode rapidly? no lives were lost."

Obama flew to New Orleans after attending a Labor Day campaign rally in Toledo, Ohio, part of a tour leading to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., which begins Tuesday. He had planned to continue across the state for a second event in Cleveland, but cut the trip short to head south instead.

The president denied political motivations behind his trip, telling first responders and members of the press that visits to disaster areas are "not just for photo-ops" - a point he later underscored in live, televised remarks.

"When disasters like this happen, we set aside whatever petty disagreements we may have," Obama said. "Nobody's a Democrat or Republican. We're all just Americans looking out for one another."

A bipartisan contingent of state and federal leaders accompanied Obama for the visit, including Louisiana Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, a top surrogate for GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney, and FEMA administrator Craig Fugate. Democrats Sen. Mary Landrieu and Rep. Cedric Richmond and Republicans Sen. David Vitter and Rep. Jeff Landry also joined the presidential tour.

Hello, I am a kitten that was rescued out of an animal control. The Animal Control was awesome. I thought I was being invaded by aliens but once at the animal control they learned that I had 2 Cuterebra. Cuterebra are large fly larvae that can infest the skin of small animals. Cats or kittens can get it when they find a small nest of rodents where newly hatched eggs could be. I had one behind my left ear and one on my upper right cheek. I have a head tilt due to where the Cuterebra were. It doesn't affect me in my normal kitten activities. I do feel a little off balance when picked up, but my foster mom is learning how to pick me up to help me. The head tilt may or may not be permanent says the doctor. Some people think it's cute. I really enjoy playing with the turbo chaser and jingle balls. I really hope you choose to adopt me because I want to be the one to put a smile on your face.
